Mystery

The Church and the Spirit To start our service we are going to sing a hymn that we know well. It's called "Give me oil in my lamp". Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning, give me oil in my lamp I pray. Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning. Keep me burning till the end of day. Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna to the King of kings! Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna to the King! Give me love in my heart keep me serving, give me love in my heart I pray. Give me love in my heart keep me serving. Keep me serving till the end of day. Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna to the King of kings. Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna to the King! Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising, give me joy in my heart I pray. Give me joy in my heart keep me praising. Keep me praising till the end of day. Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna to the King of kings! Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna to the King! Our first reading is taken from the Acts of the Apostles. Jesus and his friends were on the Mount of Olives, outside Jerusalem. The time had come for the final goodbye. It was nearly six weeks since Jesus had been crucified and had risen from the dead. "Very soon," Jesus said, "God will send you his Spirit. He will help you to speak out bravely. You are to tell all the people in the world what I have done. Tell them the good news that everyone who trusts in me and is truly sorry for the wrong he's done will be forgiven. I will give him a new life!" When he had said this, Jesus was taken up into heaven. As they watched, a cloud hid him. Suddenly, two men dressed in white were standing with him. "Jesus has gone back to be with God," they said, "But one day he will return." In that reading, Jesus said we must be sorry for the wrong things we have done. Together, let us ask for God's forgiveness. ALL: Forgive us Lord for unkind words, for thoughtless actions, for doing things we know to be wrong, and not doing things we should. For all these things - I am truly sorry Lord. We lift our voices to God as we sing "Lord have mercy". Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy on us all. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy on us all. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy on us all. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy on us all. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy on us all. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy on us all. Our next reading is also from the Acts of the Apostles and tells us how the Spirit, that Jesus promised us, came to his disciples. On the Day of Pentecost, the Jewish festival at the beginning of the harvest, Jesus's friends were together in a house in Jerusalem. Suddenly there was the sound of a strong wind blowing. Flames of fire touched each person. God had sent his Spirit as Jesus had promised. They began to speak in languages they had never learnt. At the time, Jerusalem was crowded with visitors from many different countries who had come for the Festival. To their surprise, they heard these men telling them in their own language about the wonderful things God had done. Peter stood up to speak. "Let me tell you about Jesus," he said. He told them of the marvellous things Jesus had said and done; how he had been put to death and how God had brought him to life again. "Ask God to forgive you. Begin a new life. Be baptized in the name of Jesus. And God will give you his Spirit. He will stay with you always and help you." We are now going to sing a hymn in praise of the Spirit. It's called "Walk in the light". The Spirit lives to set us free, walk, walk in the light. He binds us all in unity, walk, walk in the light. Walk in the light, walk in the light, walk in the light, walk in the light of the Lord. When Jesus died on Calvary, walk, walk in the light, He saved the lost like you and me, walk, walk in the light. Walk in the light, walk in the light, walk in the light, walk in the light of the Lord. We know his death was not the end, walk, walk in the light. He gave his Spirit to be our friend, walk, walk in the light. Walk in the light, walk in the light, walk in the light, walk in the light of the Lord. The Spirit lives in you and me, walk, walk in the light. His light will shine for all to see, walk, walk in the light. Walk in the light, walk in the light, walk in the light, walk in the light of the Lord. Let us pray. Father we thank you for all those people who make camp possible for us. Thank you for the leaders, helpers and scouts who have given up their time for us. Thank you also for Johann and Mr. & Mrs. Jones who have all in some way contributed to this weekend. AMEN O God our Father in heaven, may we always feel that you are near us. We have your promise that the Holy Spirit will help and strengthen us. Help us never to forget this. AMEN Father help us to listen to your voice. Give us courage when others want us to do wrong and to do what we know is right. AMEN Dear Lord, I pray that you will help us to be honest and that you will keep us safe from evil. Help us to always speak the truth. AMEN Heavenly Father, thank you that you have not given us the spirit of fear but of power and love. Let the peace of God rule in our hearts. We trust in you Lord, show us the things we should do. AMEN Lord, let us feel your strength upholding us, your love enfolding us and your Spirit giving us confidence. AMEN Now we are going to sing the prayer given to us by Jesus Christ - The Lord's prayer. Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, hallowed be thy name, hallowed be thy name. On earth as it is in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Give us this day our daily bread, hallowed be thy name, hallowed be thy name. Forgive us our trespasses, Hallowed be thy name, as we forgive those who trespass against us, hallowed be thy name, hallowed be thy name. And lead us not into temptation, hallowed be thy name, but deliver us from all that is evil, hallowed be thy name, hallowed be thy name. For thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory, hallowed be thy name, for ever, and for ever and ever, hallowed be thy name, hallowed be thy name. Amen, amen, it shall be so, hallowed be thy name. Amen, amen, it shall be so, hallowed be thy name, hallowed be thy name. Go out into the world in peace. Keep hold of what is good; never pay back wrong for wrong; encourage those who fear, help the weak, give due respect to everyone. Be always joyful; keep up your prayers; give thanks often to God. AMEN Our final hymn is a camp favourite. It's called "One more step". One more step along the world I go, One more step along the world I go, From the old things to the new Keep me travelling along with you. And it's from the old I travel to the new, Keep me travelling along with you. Round the corners of the world I turn, More and more about the world I learn. And the new things that I see You'll be looking at along with me. And it's from the old I travel to the new, Keep me travelling along with you. As I travel through the bad and good Keep me travelling the way I should. Where I see no way to go You'll be telling me the way, I know. And it's from the old I travel to the new, Keep me travelling along with you. Give me courage when the world is rough, Keep me loving though the world is tough. Leap and sing in all I do, keep me travelling along with you. And it's from the old I travel to the new, Keep me travelling along with you. You are older than the world can be, You are younger than the life in me. Ever old and ever new, Keep me travelling along with you. And it's from the old I travel to the new, Keep me travelling along with you.
