1st FARNBOROUGH CUBS CAMP (1st May - 3rd May 1993)

THEME:- BRITISH WILD ANIMALS

BADGE WORK:- To complete the Naturalist Badge.

SATURDAY

10.30 Cubs arrive.
10.45 GRAND HOWL and Introduction to Leaders and Camp Theme.
All leaders to be present during Grand Howl and Akela to explain camp theme.
11.00 Cubs allocated to sixes and tents
meet scouts, Change into camp kit, sort areas and make up beds.
11.30 Drink.
11.45 Show round facilities and outside area.
Scouts to show their sixes round the facilities, leaders will be at each area to explain the DOES and DONT'S.
12.00 Introduction to Camp Scrap Book.[Animals & Trees]
Explain what is required in the scrap books, ie: each sixes animals, the habitat, food, life style etc. What is required for the trees section, note that some of this will be covered during the weekend. When and where they are to do the work.
13.00 Packed Lunch + Spud bashing.
13.30 Bases.
  1. Map & Compass
    Be able to set a map to north, read 6 fiqure map references and identify local symbols on the map. Need 4 compasses and 4 1:25,000 local maps.
  2. Identify Trees
    Collect a leaf of a number of trees and identify them. Talk about the types of trees found locally. Remind that it is part of the scrapbook. Need books on trees and handouts.
  3. Camp Gadgets
    Construct useful gadgets that can be used during camp, ie: towel rail. Need canes, broom handles, string and rubber bands.
  4. Insect Search
    Identify insects from the local area. Need an umbrella, white paper, containers and books.
14.45 Action games.
Continuous cricket, rounders, tug-of-war etc. Need rope, cricket bat, balls and rounders bat.
15.00 Drink.
15.15 Bases.
16.30 Action games.
17.30 Prepare and wash for dinner.
18.00 DINNER
18.45 Wash and tidy area.
19.15 Flag Down.
Wide game. OR Charades.
Organised by the scouts prior to the camp and agreed with the leaders.
20.15 Wash and prepare for bed.

Learn the country code and be able to use it during the ramble. Country code posters. In groups of two sixes.
10.30 Tracking. [2 sixes]
Learn the tracking signs. Each group lays a trail then follows the others. Tracking handouts. In groups of two sixes
11.00 Drink + Spud Bashing.
11.30 Initiative Challenge. (Ramble away from camp site)

Camp fire.

Sixes to gather at tents, as the camp fire is opened walk to the circle singing Campfires Burning. Optional for scouts; they prepare hot chocolate afterwards.
21.15 Drink. Map Symbol Bingo.
In the main hall during the evening drink. Map Symbol Bingo set.
Map bingo is as normal bingo but using symbols not numbers
21.45 Wash and bed.

10.00 Super Six Olympics.
  1. Kims Game.
    Show 20 items on a tray and then give 4 minutes to write down the items. Select items available locally.
  2. Grass Ski Relay
    In teams, follow a course on grass ski's. Points for the best team work and winners. Need 4 Grass Ski's.
    Grass skis are planks of wood with 6 straps so an entire six wears the skis. Rings cut from car inner tubes make good straps.
  3. Egg and Spoon Relay
    Relay race, each cub carries the egg and passes to the next. Substitute golf balls for eggs. Points for the best team work and winners. Need spoons and golf balls.
  4. Quiz
    General and nature knowledge quiz. Points for the best team work and winners.
  5. Skipping, hoop and skittle relay
    Assault course, Skipping, hoops and skittle relay. Points for the best team work and winners. Need skipping ropes, large hoops, skittles and course markers.
11.00 Drink.
11.15 Super Six Olympics continued.
11.45 Tidy, clear personal kit. Strike and pack tents.
Timing depends on the weather. Strike tents and load equipment as available.
12.45 Prepare for lunch.
13.00 LUNCH.
13.45 Wash and tidy area.
14.00 Team games.
14.30 Drink.
14.45 Change into uniform.
Change into uniform and pack ALL personel kit.
15.00 Final Ceromony - Awards - Grand Howl.

RAMBLE INFORMATION 1993

SCAVENGER HUNT:

Bark rubbings, find 4 different named trees.
Give a questionaire to each six before starting the ramble, note the direction to be taken and ensure they are on the correct route.

SCRAP BOOK:

Continue work on the Natural History scrapbooks using books and materials provided.

CAMOFLAGUE:

Using natural materials and face creams, be able to successfully conceal yourself in the local area.

HIDES - SHELTERS:

Using equipment provided make a shelter that will enable three or more to be protected from the weather. Use as many of the natural features available in deciding the location and construction of shelter.
